Zay: Casino relocation bill heard in committee
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 3, 2025) — A bill authored by State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) that would allow the license for Indiana's lowest-performing casino to be moved to New Haven was heard in the Senate Committee on Public Policy last week.
Senate Bill 293 would allow the licensed owner of the riverboat gambling operation located in the city of Rising Sun to relocate gaming operations to a casino in the city of New Haven if certain conditions are met.
SB 293 would be an economic win for New Haven, Allen County and Northeast Indiana. The relocation from Rising Sun to New Haven would not only benefit the economy, but it would also create a new dynamic destination for over 1.5 million people. The current southeast Indiana market this casino is located in is oversaturated. Moving it to an under-served market, like northeast Indiana, would be a win-win for the casino's business and the local community.
"I am truly proud of the work New Haven Mayor Steve McMichael and his council have put toward this effort and thank them for their continued support on this bill," Zay said. "While this bill did not move out of committee, I still believe this development could be a huge benefit for northeast Indiana and will continue working closely with local officials on future economic development efforts. I want to thank the many residents from northeast Indiana who traveled down to the Statehouse to testify – it was inspiring to see so many locals engaged in the potential happenings of their communities."
Zay encourages residents of Senate District 17 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Zay can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Zay or by phone at 800-382-9467.
