During a budget year, lawmakers in the Indiana General Assembly work hard to craft a state budget that works well for all Hoosiers. This process can become very difficult and complicated as they balance many different priorities.
In recent years, Medicaid spending has grown at a concerning rate. Historically, the biggest share of our state's General Fund spending has gone toward K-12 education. Due to the increasing amount of state spending needed to fully fund the Medicaid program, it has become a challenge to fund other priorities, like education.
Medicaid is an important resource that some Hoosiers depend on. With the recent increase in spending, lawmakers need to make some changes to the program to ensure those who need it can continue to rely on it.
This is why Senate Republicans are prioritizing Senate Bill 2 this year, which would help control Medicaid spending by ensuring only those who are eligible can receive the benefits from the program.
While Senate Bill 2 does not solve everything, it is a very important first step toward more efficiently managing our Medicaid program.
Senate Republicans proudly champion a long history of fiscal responsibility, which is why they are prioritizing solutions that will slow the concerning growth in Medicaid spending and craft a balanced budget that will improve the lives of all Hoosiers.
