By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)
Last week, the General Assembly officially passed the midway point of the 2025 legislative session, bringing on a new phase for legislation to move to the House or Senate.
With this being my first session serving as a state legislator, it has been an honor to play an active role in this process, and work alongside my colleagues as we craft state initiatives that best serve Hoosiers.
During the first half of session, 521 bills were introduced into the Senate, and 156 of those passed out of the chamber.
Of the bills that successfully passed, more than 90% received bipartisan support, and nearly half received unanimous support from senators.
This year, we are working toward enacting meaningful property tax reform, containing Medicaid costs and preventing fraud, lowering health care costs, managing our state's water resources responsibly, and increasing fiscal integrity and contract accountability in state government.
This legislation could provide necessary tax relief and government transparency for hardworking Hoosiers, and is a step toward a more secure future for our great state.
The Senate will now start considering the 178 House bills that passed out of the House of Representatives during the first half of session.
These House bills will be revisited once we reconvene on March 3rd.
I am looking forward to regrouping with my colleagues to continue shaping a better way of life for those who call Indiana home.
