In recent years, the state of Indiana has worked hard to exercise fiscal responsibility as stewards of taxpayer dollars.
At the end of 2024, the state had a $2.6 billion cash reserve and currently has the fourth lowest debt per capita in the country at $186 per Hoosier.
While Indiana has maintained responsible management of taxpayer money, our federal government has slid further into debt.
As of April 1, the federal government's debt totals more than $36 trillion, equating to more than $107,000 in debt per American citizen.
Of this debt, more than $8 trillion is owed to people from outside the United States – including more than $1 trillion owed to individuals in China. In fact, former Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats once warned our country's debt "is unsustainable and represents a dire future threat to our economy and to our national security."
With our federal debt continuing to grow, and much of it from outside the United States, I authored Senate Resolution 51 in order to recognize the seriousness of the national debt and its threat to our security.
Our federal government must work harder to decrease spending and lower debt in order to strengthen our economy and national security.
As your state senator, I will dedicate my time to ensure our state government lives within its means and work with federal lawmakers to find ways to reduce our national debt so that burden is not left to our children and grandchildren.
