Brown: Bill to strengthen parental rights heads to governor's
desk

STATEHOUSE (April 9, 2025)A bill authored by State Sen. Liz Brown (R-Fort Wayne) that would strengthen Hoosiers' parental rights is heading to the governor's desk for final consideration.

Senate Enrolled Act 143 would prohibit the government from withholding information about a child’s health or wellbeing from parents. Additionally, the bill would prevent government employees from advising or directing a child to withhold information from their parents.

The bill would also establish a legal standard to be applied by the courts in all cases when parents must turn to the court system to exercise their rights. SEA 143 would establish that parents in Indiana have a fundamental right to direct the upbringing, religious instruction, education and health care of their child.

"Parents have the right to raise their children how they choose, and SEA 143 will ensure this right is protected in Indiana," Brown said. "Hoosier parents can direct their child's upbringing without fear of the government unjustly withholding information on their child's health and wellbeing. I am proud to see many of my colleagues dedicated to protecting parents' rights, and I thank them for their support."

As the 2025 session continues, Brown encourages residents of Senate District 15 to contact her with any questions or comments they may have. Brown can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Brown or by phone at 800-382-9467.
