By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)
Throughout my time in public service, I have worked to practice fiscal responsibility so taxpayer dollars are invested wisely.
With the release of the Senate version of the budget on April 10, our responsibility as lawmakers to prioritize a balanced two-year budget is more important than ever.
Upholding our state's responsible management of taxpayer money has continued to be one of my main focuses as a legislator.
Under the Senate version of the 2026-2027 budget, Indiana would continue to see revenues exceed expenditures and the state would have adequate funding in reserves by the end of fiscal year 2027. These reserve funds are critical so our state can weather unforeseen circumstances.
I am committed to ensuring that our state lives within its means in the coming years, pushing for the passage of a state budget that reflects our fiscal responsibility.
When the state ensures that taxpayer dollars are being invested wisely, we are taking the necessary steps toward a state government that functions efficiently on behalf of all Hoosiers.
K-12 education takes up the largest portion of the proposed $46.8 billion budget at 47% while Medicaid spending will take up an additional 22% of the budget.
The K-12 education funding includes an increase in tuition support by $870 million over the next two years compared to current funding levels.
Proposing a strong budget is an opportunity to positively impact our state, and I am proud to work with my colleagues to make needed investments while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
