STATEHOUSE (Jan. 22, 2025) — A bill authored by State Sen. Linda Rogers (R-Granger) that would increase the minimum salary for teachers and expand the coverage of health care services for school corporation employees unanimously passed the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development today.
Senate Bill 146 would require school corporations to increase the minimum salary for a teacher employed by a school corporation to $45,000. Indiana's current law has the minimum set at $40,000. Additionally, it would require a school corporation to expend an amount for teacher compensation that is at least 65% of state tuition support.
The bill also seeks to create more affordable health care costs for educators by tasking the Indiana Department of Education with analyzing the feasibility and costs associated with increasing school corporation employee health plan options.
"Hoosier teachers are constantly working hard to ensure our next generation of Indiana citizens are prepared, and they deserve to feel supported in their roles as educators," Rogers said. "Senate Bill 146 seeks to help expand opportunities for current teachers while also attracting new educators to our state to help our schools continue to grow."
SB 146 would also provide 20 days of paid leave for a full-time teacher and 10 days of paid leave for a part-time teacher for certain parental circumstances, including the birth of a child, the placement of a child for adoption or the stillbirth of a child.
"As a former teacher myself, I am pleased to see this bill pass with unanimous support, and I look forward to continuing to shepherd it through the legislative process," Rogers said.
SB 146 will now move to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for further consideration. To track the progress of this and other bills authored or supported by Rogers, click here.
