Rogers: Bill to increase teacher compensation heads to governor

STATEHOUSE (April 24, 2025)A bill authored by Sen. Linda Rogers (R-Granger) that would increase the minimum salary for teachers and help hire educators in high-need areas passed the Senate Wednesday, April 23.

Senate Enrolled Act 146 would require schools to pay a minimum salary of $45,000 to their teachers, an increase from the $40,000 minimum salary in place today. It would also require schools to spend at least 65% of their state tuition support on teacher pay.

"As a former teacher myself, I know what a critical role teachers play in our state, and I believe it is important for them to receive additional support," Rogers said. "This bill will not only increase pay for teachers, but also ensure our schools are well-staffed and our students are receiving the best education."

The bill would also create the Indiana Teacher Recruitment Program to provide grants to training and recruitment programs for teachers in high-need areas like STEM education. Finally, it would create a study to determine the feasibility of increasing school health plan options.

SEA 146 now heads to the governor's desk for further consideration.

Rogers encourages residents of Senate District 11 to contact her with any questions or comments they may have. Rogers can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Rogers or by phone at 800-382-9467.
