Leising: Property tax appeal window closes June 17

STATEHOUSE (May 30, 2024) — State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) is reminding constituents any property tax assessment appeals must be filed with their county by June 17.

"Many constituents have noted that their property tax assessment has risen. This has especially been the case with farmers, who have dealt with larger assessments and a larger base tax rate for agricultural property,” Leising said. "I want to make sure constituents know this appeals process is available if they believe they had to pay more than what they really owe."

The first step in the appeals process is to file a Form 130 – Taxpayer's Notice to initiate an Appeal –with the local assessing official. This form should detail why the value for the current year is being disputed.

Afterward, the assessor will make a recommendation to deny or approve the appeal. If denied, it will be forwarded to the county Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals for further review. If it is denied again, the decision may be appealed to the Indiana Board of Tax Review and then the Indiana Tax Court.

The full timeline for the appeal process can be found here.
