Improving Government Efficiency

Improving Government Efficiency

Friday, January 31, 2025

In recent years, Senate Republicans have supported many efforts aimed at cutting waste and holding our state government accountable for how it uses hardworking taxpayers' dollars.

This year, we are prioritizing a bill that would promote fiscal responsibility and government efficiency. The bill has three different working components – state contract accountability, oversight of new federal funds and programs, and efficiency in government staffing.

Senate Bill 5 would require state agencies with active contracts of $500,000 or more to regularly update the State Budget Committee. An agency would also be responsible for contacting the State Budget Committee if it would like further funding or have amendments added to an existing contract.

SB 5 would also improve efficiency in government staffing by reviewing positions that have been vacant for at least 90 days. This review, which would be conducted by the State Personnel Director, would remove or reallocate a vacant state position to create a more productive government system.

It is our caucus's utmost priority to ensure Hoosiers see their hard-earned money is being invested responsibly, and SB 5 will aid in doing that. Senate Republicans work hard to maintain our long history of fiscal responsibility, which involves making necessary improvements to government efficiency when needed so Hoosier taxpayers can have confidence and trust in their state government.
