Doriot: Bill to strengthen Indiana's elections passes committee

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 27, 2025) — A bill authored by State Sen. Blake Doriot (R-Goshen) that would strengthen voter identification and improve voter list maintenance passed the Senate Committee on Elections today.

Senate Bill 10 would prohibit the use of student IDs as voter identification, ensuring only Hoosier residents are voting in Indiana.

“There has been a growing concern about election security in recent years, and it is our role to ensure that our voter identification process is secure and accurate,” Doriot said. “Student IDs are not an accurate form of voter identification as they don't confirm a voter's residency. This doesn't stop Hoosier students from voting, only those who don't live in the state.”

SB 10 would also improve the accuracy of voter rolls by requiring voter list maintenance at least twice a year, county offices to verify the status of non-active voters and the Election Division to request other states join the Indiana Data Enhancement Association.

"These measures are intended to help give people some peace of mind that our elections remain fair and secure," Doriot said. "I am pleased to see this bill pass in committee, and I look forward to shepherding this bill through the rest of the legislative process."

SB 10 will now move to the full Senate for further consideration.

Doriot encourages residents of Senate District 12 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Doriot can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Doriot or by phone at 800-382-9467.
