Dernulc: General Assembly meets for first session day of 2025

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 10, 2025) — State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) gathered with fellow legislators this week at the Statehouse for the first week of the 2025 legislative session.

While the 124th session ceremonially began on Organization Day in November, state lawmakers return to the Statehouse to work on legislation in January. By state law, the 2025 session will conclude on or before April 29.

"I am happy to be back at the Statehouse and putting all the preparation we have done during the 2024 interim to good use," Dernulc said. "This session, I am working on a number of bills covering various topics, including the oversight of the Little Calumet River basin development commission, a tax deduction for disabled veterans, strengthening property rights, reporting on mobile credentials, protecting Department of Child Services therapists, exempting requirements for the sale of trailers, protecting children, increasing punishments for child traffickers, repealing a common construction prevailing wage law that directly affects iron workers, clean dietary health supplements, covering Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease care, the oath of a ballot counter, Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals appointments, beer and wine un-corking policies, and the ability for the governing body of the School City of Hammond school corporation to be exempt from compliance with certain requirements concerning the Gavit High School building."

During the first session of each General Assembly, lawmakers craft a comprehensive budget to fund government services for the next two fiscal years.

As the 2025 session gets underway, Dernulc encourages residents of Senate District 1 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Dernulc can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Dernulc or by phone at 800-382-9467.
