Dernulc: Bill to improve the sale of utility trailers passes committee

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 28, 2025)A bill authored by State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) that would improve the sale of utility trailers was amended and passed the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation unanimously today.

Senate Bill 73 would take utility trailers out of the definition of "motor vehicle" to make it easier for big box stores to sell them. Right now, these stores need a distributor license from the Secretary of State's office to sell trailers even though they shouldn't be considered vehicles.

"These utility trailers should not be considered motor vehicles as they have to be towed behind a motor vehicle to apply their intended function of transporting additional material," Dernulc said. "Being under this definition has made the sale of these trailers difficult, and I am looking to make them more accessible to those who want to sell them in Indiana. I look forward to towing this language through the Senate to make sure utility trailers end up under the correct definition in our law."

SB 73 will now move to the full Senate for further consideration.
