Brown: Cybersecurity bill passes Senate
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 20, 2025) — A bill authored by State Sen. Liz Brown (R-Fort Wayne) that would establish a state Cybersecurity Insurance Program passed the Senate today by a vote of 47 to 2.
Senate Bill 472 would require public entities of the state to adopt best practices with regards to their technology resources policies and cybersecurity policies no later than Dec. 31, 2027.
“The complexity of technology in today's environment is advancing rapidly, and it's best our government takes the necessary steps to ensure our data is secure," Brown said. "Last year, I authored Senate Enrolled Act 150, which created the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force. Members of this task force, including myself serving as co-chair, met during the interim to conduct in-depth studies on AI and efficient cybersecurity measures. Using many of the findings from this interim, I authored SB 472 to establish much-needed safeguards for government agencies in the case that a cybersecurity incident does happen and their data is breached."
As cyberattacks and data security breaches continue to grow exponentially, this bill would help ensure state agencies and political subdivisions are exercising due care with the information they are storing, while also offering stronger insurance protections to offset the risk of a cyberattack.
SB 472 now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
As the 2025 session continues, Brown encourages residents of Senate District 15 to contact her with any questions or comments they may have. Brown can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Brown or by phone at 800-382-9467.
