Statement from State Sen. Spencer Deery

State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette) made the following statement today in regard to his bill addressing the state's teacher shortage and bullying being voted out of committee:

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 22, 2025) — "I am pleased to see the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development unanimously pass Senate Bill 255 out of committee today.

"This bill would address Indiana's teacher shortage by creating pathways for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) college graduates to gain a teaching certificate if they pass a subject matter test, complete nine specific education credits and gain field experience in the classroom.

"The bill would also strengthen our laws to prevent bullying in Indiana schools by requiring parents to be notified if their child is part of a bullying incident.

"Whether their child is the victim or perpetrator, parents have a right to know their child was involved in a bullying situation.

"I appreciate the parents and educators I worked with to get this bill filed and look forward to continued work on it through the legislative process."
