Statement from State Sen. Aaron Freeman
State Sen. Aaron Freeman (R-Indianapolis) made the following statement today in response to data released about drug overdose-related deaths in Marion County:

STATEHOUSE (March 10, 2025) — "The Marion County Coroner's Office, in collaboration with the Marion County Public Health Department, has released its quarterly report showing a promising decline in the number of Hoosiers dying from fentanyl.

"The report highlights that fentanyl remains the most common substance involved in drug-related deaths, accounting for 74% of the cases. However, it also reveals an encouraging statistic: the number of fentanyl-related overdose deaths in Marion County has decreased nearly 50% from 2023 to 2024.

"While I am pleased to see this progress, it is no time to become complacent. We must remain vigilant in our fight to keep harmful drugs like fentanyl out of our communities. That is why I proposed Senate Bill 324 this year, which would increase penalties for individuals dealing methamphetamine or fentanyl.

"This legislation, supported by the governor, represents a critical step in boosting public safety and holding drug dealers accountable for the devastation they cause. SB 324 is now under consideration in the House of Representatives, and I am committed to continuing its progress through the legislative process to protect our loved ones and strengthen our communities."
