Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Working to lower property taxes

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

While Indiana has some of the nation's lowest property taxes for homeowners, in recent years, some Hoosiers across the state have experienced concerning increases in their property tax bills.

That's why this year, Senate Republicans have made passing meaningful property tax reform as the top priority.

Property taxes are set and used by local governments like cities, towns and counties – not the state government – to help fund local services like police and fire departments. That is why it is important to balance lowering taxes for Hoosier property owners with funding the needs of local governments.

As a former county councilman myself, I am a strong proponent of delivering solutions at the local level.

Currently, Senate Bill 1 – our caucus's top priority bill – reflects Gov. Mike Braun's plan to cut property taxes. This bill will likely go through changes during the legislative process in the General Assembly. I look forward to working with constituents and local communities to ensure property tax reform is enacted.

As we work on property tax reform this year, it is important to note that any legislation this session will not impact tax bills Hoosiers receive until next year.

Like most Hoosiers, I believe government should live within its means and work to control its spending so we get the most efficient government with our tax dollars, while also protecting our families and ensuring our children get a high-quality education.
