Schmitt: Resolution to recognize the urgency of national debt and its threat to national security passes Senate

STATEHOUSE (April 8, 2025) – A resolution authored by State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper) recognizing the threat federal debt poses to national security unanimously passed the Senate Monday, April 7.

Senate Resolution 51 prioritizes the seriousness of the national debt. To combat the rapid growth of the federal government's debt, SR 51 directs attention to the $36 trillion that the federal government has accumulated in debt, including the $8 trillion owed to entities outside of the United States.

This resolution provides a necessary call to action and holds the federal government accountable in decreasing unsustainable spending.

"Our ability to recognize the growing threat of federal debt to this country is essential for a secure economy that does not burden our children and grandchildren," Schmitt said. "SR 51 is a wake-up call to the weight of national debt on our future economy, and I am committed to upholding the fiscal responsibility of our state to work with federal lawmakers on this issue."
