STATEHOUSE (April 8, 2025) — A bill sponsored by State Sen. Linda Rogers (R-Granger) that would help improve math proficiency in Hoosier students passed the Senate with bipartisan support today.
House Bill 1634 would require each school corporation and charter middle school to automatically enroll a student who meets certain conditions in a middle school advanced course. It would also require students in kindergarten, first and second grades to take a state-approved screener to identify students who are at risk of not meeting grade level proficiency.
"According to the 2024 ILEARN test results, only 40.7% of Hoosier students are at or above proficiency standards in math," Rogers said. "As a former math teacher myself, I am pleased to see this bill move forward in the legislative process. By ensuring our next generation is taught well-rounded math skills, we are helping prepare them for successful futures, and I am proud to have shepherded this bill through the Senate."
Because it received amendments in the Senate, HB 1634 will now return to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
Rogers encourages residents of Senate District 11 to contact her with any questions or comments they may have. Rogers can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Rogers or by phone at 800-382-9467.
