Raatz Roundup: Supporting Hoosier Educators

Supporting Future Educators

By State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond)

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) is accepting applications for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, which gives future teachers the opportunity to earn up to $40,000 in financial aid.

This scholarship program was originally created by a law I supported in 2016 to help address the state's teacher shortage, with the award amount totaling $30,000.

In 2023, I supported a law to increase the amount of money the CHE can award a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship from $7,500 each year to $10,000 if the individual agrees to teach at an eligible Indiana school for at least five years.

I also sponsored a new law that allowed any additional funds left in the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship fund to be used for the Transition to Teaching Scholarship.

I recommend interested students complete an application as soon as possible, as we had a record-breaking 945 applicants to the program this past year, which was an increase of 58%, and 300 students received the scholarship.

The scholarship is open to current high school seniors and college students who plan to teach in Indiana for at least five years after graduating from college.

It also requires an applicant to be ranked in the top 20% of their high school graduating class, have a top 20% SAT or ACT score or a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Applications must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2025 to ScholarTrack.in.gov.

Indiana also offers several other grants to support future teachers in high-need fields, including for institutions that support the training of STEM teachers and for scholarships for special education, math or science teachers.
