With the Indiana State Fair wrapping up last month, it is only fair to congratulate members of the Indiana FFA and 4-H for all the work they put in to develop the exhibits prior to and during the weeks-long event.
Senate District 27, which recently saw several family farms in Wayne County and elsewhere recognized for being in operation for over 100 years, is fortunate to have a rich agricultural heritage, and these hard-working young people deserve recognition for continuing that legacy.
Even as we have lost farmland and farms over the last decade in Indiana, the number of farmers and farming productivity has actually increased from 2012 to 2022, according to the U.S. Census of Agriculture.
The continued strength of our agricultural industry even in the face of unique challenges is a testament to the resilience of current farmers and their ability to pass on their love of agriculture to the next generation. That is why I co-authored Senate Concurrent Resolution 21 this session to honor the state and national FFA and Senate Resolution 9 to honor Indiana 4-H.
These organizations have long given young people with an interest in farming an outlet to gain hands-on agricultural experience and education, preparing the next generation of farmers as well as leaders in many other fields.
With the motto of "Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve," FFA members serve and make a positive impact in their communities year-round, and I'm proud to have some great chapters in Senate District 27, including at New Castle High School, which recently welcomed a new chapter, Hagerstown, Lincoln Middle/High School, Tri High and Knightstown High School.
With a mission to provide “real-life educational opportunities that develop young people who will have a positive impact in their communities and the world,” 4-H is also making Senate District 27 a better place.
Congratulations to all the students and chapter advisors on a successful State Fair. I look forward to seeing what you all are able to accomplish this coming year.
