STATEHOUSE (Aug. 19, 2024) — A law sponsored by State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond) establishing an Excellence in Civic Engagement designation for schools was ceremonially signed by the governor on Aug. 15.
"I look forward to recognizing students for being engaged citizens and seeing schools recognized for their excellent work teaching them," said Raatz. "This is an important step to ensure civics remains a foundational part of our educational system."
The new law establishes an Excellence in Civic Engagement designation that may be earned by a high school student and recognized on their transcript starting with the graduating class of 2029 based on documented volunteer hours, participation in project-based learning activities, and the completion of coursework that shows an understanding of civil society, constitutional government and the democratic process.
Schools can also receive this designation if a significant number of students earn this designation, among other criteria.
