By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a popular tool with both positive and negative impacts.
With technology constantly changing, it is important to learn how AI can be used to benefit Hoosiers and how we can protect ourselves from those who wish to use the technology to harm us.
The Indiana General Assembly considered several AI-related bills this year, including House Enrolled Act 1133, which ensures election integrity in the state by requiring disclaimers on political communications generated by AI.
This year I also supported Senate Enrolled Act 150, which created the Artificial Intelligence Task Force.
In the weeks ahead, the AI Task Force will study the benefits and risks AI technology-use can have to state agencies, impacts on the rights of Hoosiers by state agency-use of AI, and development of recommendations and best practices to improve privacy and security among the branches of government.
Once the task force has completed its work for the year, it will make a series of legislative recommendations the General Assembly can consider during the 2025 legislative session.
Like many of the General Assembly's interim study committees, the AI Task Force began meeting earlier this month and will continue meeting throughout the coming months.
