STATEHOUSE (April 1, 2025) — A resolution sponsored by State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle) that would rename a bridge in Jay County in honor of Lance Cpl. Andrew Whitacre unanimously passed the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation Tuesday, April 1.
House Concurrent Resolution 9 would urge the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the bridge on State Road 67 over the Salamonie River the "Lance Corporal Andrew Whitacre Memorial Bridge."
Lance Cpl. Whitacre was a decorated Marine, serving with the 2nd battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine division, I Marine Expeditionary Force. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan where he was killed in the line of duty during combat operations in 2008.
"There is no act more selfless and brave than sacrificing one's life for the freedom of others," Holdman said. "Lance Cpl. Whitacre dedicated his life to protecting our freedoms. It is an honor to memorialize his actions and know that every time we cross that bridge, we are celebrating a decorated service member from our community."
HCR 9 now moves to the full Senate for further consideration.
Holdman encourages residents of Senate District 19 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Holdman can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Holdman or by phone at 800-382-9467.
