STATEHOUSE (April 8, 2025) — A resolution sponsored by State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle) that would rename a bridge in Jay County in honor of Lance Cpl. Andrew Whitacre unanimously passed the Senate Monday, April 7.
House Concurrent Resolution 9 urges the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the bridge on State Road 67 over the Salamonie River to the "Lance Corporal Andrew Whitacre Memorial Bridge."
Lance Cpl. Whitacre was a decorated Marine, serving with the 2nd battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine division, I Marine Expeditionary Force. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan where he was killed in the line of duty during combat operations in 2008.
"Lance Cpl. Whitacre embodied what it means to be a Hoosier and an American. He devoted his life to protecting the freedom of our country and all who live here," Holdman said. "With this resolution, when we cross this bridge, we can celebrate the brave and selfless acts Lance Cpl. Whitacre and all members of our armed forces make every day. It was an honor to sponsor this resolution to memorialize a decorated service member from our community."
