STATEHOUSE (Jan. 23, 2025) — Bills authored by State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) that would improve the oversight of the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission and amend the requirements for Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals (PTABOA) members were heard in the Senate Committee on Local Government today.
Senate Bill 40 would require the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission to submit an annual budget to the Lake County Council for approval.
"The members of the Little Calument River Basin Development Commission are doing a fine job serving as the local sponsor for the Little Calumet River, Indiana Flood Control and Recreation Project. I just believe there should be some oversight, by elected officials, of the tax payer money going into the commission to ensure it is being used in an effective way to benefit the whole community," Dernulc said.
Senate Bill 187 would amend the requirements for the PTABOA members to ensure those on the board are residents of Indiana.
"Indiana has run into an issue where we have residents from other states serving as PTABOA members who have vested interests other than serving their local community. It is important that we have Indiana residents on this board to ensure we have equal and fair property tax assessments for those who have chosen to call Indiana their primary home," Dernulc said.
SB 40 was amended and recommitted to the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy and SB 187 was held in the Senate Committee on Local Government for further consideration.
