Busch: Physician noncompete agreements bill passes Senate
STATEHOUSE (Jan. 29, 2025) — A bill authored by State Sen. Justin Busch (R-Fort Wayne) that would eliminate physician noncompete agreements passed the Senate on Tuesday, Jan. 28 with a bipartisan vote of 47 to 2.
Noncompete clauses are terms that many hospitals include in their physicians' contracts that prohibit doctors from practicing in specific geographic areas for a set amount of time once they leave a certain practice or group.
Senate Bill 475 builds on language passed by Busch in 2023 and would allow all physicians to move more easily between practices without fear of litigation. The elimination of noncompetes would lead to higher job satisfaction, lower turnover and an increased number of physicians who can stay where they are needed most in Indiana.
"This freedom for physicians will help foster better long-lasting patient-doctor relationships, and that's what should be at the core of health care," Busch said. "By allowing patients to stay with the doctors they trust and who know them best, Hoosiers can receive the high-quality care and attention they deserve."
As the 2025 session gets underway, Busch encourages residents of Senate District 16 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Busch can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.in.gov/s16 or by phone at 317-232-9488.
