Alting: Bill to improve Indiana's Lifeline Law heads to governor's desk

STATEHOUSE (March 20, 2025) — A bill authored by State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) that would update Indiana's Lifeline Law passed in the House of Representatives today with bipartisan support of 87-3.

Indiana's current lifeline law extends legal protections to minors under the influence of alcohol who call to report a medical emergency.

Senate Enrolled Act 74 would deliver the legal protections of Indiana's Lifeline Law to those in need of medical attention due to overconsumption of alcohol when a call for help is made.

"This bill plays a critical role in reassuring young Hoosiers and their families that their safety comes first," Alting said. "By updating Indiana's Lifeline Law, we are giving our youth the confidence they need to take action in medical emergencies and save lives."

Alting's collaboration with Purdue University students set the tone for SEA 74 and its journey through the General Assembly, inviting fresh perspectives to stand up against preconceptions of the state's lifeline law and its true purpose.

The momentum of the Indiana Lifeline Law, first taking effect in 2012 and later progressing in 2014, has since grown into a shared call to action between Indiana youth and state legislators.

"The support from Purdue students has been instrumental in bringing this legislation to life," Alting said. "I am grateful for this opportunity to promote lifesaving medical treatment for Hoosier youth."

SEA 74 now heads to the governor's desk for further consideration.

Alting encourages residents of Senate District 22 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Alting can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Alting or by phone at 800-382-9467.
