STATEHOUSE (Jan. 14, 2025) — A bill filed by State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) that would expand Indiana's lifeline law unanimously passed the Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law today.
Indiana’s Lifeline Law currently provides legal protections to minors under the influence of alcohol who call to report a medical emergency or crime.
Senate Bill 74 would expand Indiana's Lifeline Law so that a person who is in need of medical help as a result of overconsumption of alcohol also has those legal protections when a call for help is made.
"This bill would resonate with many young Hoosiers who want to get help for their friends and classmates", Alting said. "Further expansion of Indiana's Lifeline Law would protect Hoosier students and ensure they get proper medical treatment."
Alting collaborated with students at Purdue University and sought the first-hand experience of students who have witnessed the failure to understand Indiana's Lifeline Law on campus.
This shared perspective between young Hoosiers and state legislators complements the journey of the state's lifeline law, initially taking shape in 2012 and later expanding in 2014, further strengthening young Hoosiers' confidence to seek necessary medical help to save a life.
The voices of the state's youth have since introduced a necessary tone for better uncovering and understanding the issue from fresh perspectives.
"I am very grateful for the support from Purdue students on this legislation," Alting expressed. "This bill incorporates a sense of transparency between underage Hoosiers and the law, promoting the importance of Indiana's youth being informed, taking action and saving lives."
Alting encourages residents of Senate District 22 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Alting can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Alting or by phone at 800-382-9467.
