STATEHOUSE (July 22, 2024) — Several students in Senate District 27 will receive the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, said State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond).
The scholarship, created by the Indiana General Assembly in 2016 and expanded by the General Assembly in 2023, awards students up to $10,000 per year to use toward getting a degree in education in exchange for teaching at an eligible Indiana school for five years.
"It is difficult to quantify the value that a passionate teacher can bring to the lives of students in our state," Raatz said. "This program allows us to identify Hoosiers with a passion for teaching and make sure financial barriers don't prevent them from following that passion."
More than 900 students from around the state applied for the scholarship and over 300 were chosen based on academic achievement and other factors. Three students from Henry County, seven students from Wayne County, three students from Franklin County and one student from Union County received the award.
These students either graduated in the top 20 percent of their high school class, earned a score in the 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT, or had at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. To renew the scholarship in college, the students must earn at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete at least 30 credit hours per year.
